•    hurdle of race: Samaritans vs. Jews - centuries-old animosity
•    hurdle of gender: rabbis generally avoided women in public
•    hurdle of ancestry: pride in being of the right “stock”
•    hurdle of integrity: long series of failed relationships
•    hurdle of religion: correct place Mt. Gerizim, or Jerusalem?

JESUS THE SUPER SELTZER

•    Jeremiah: people dug own cisterns rather than tapping God’s spring
•    Jesus offers spring of water gushing up to eternal life
•    Holy Spirit bubbles forth in gifts, fruit - very positive

IMMEDIATE MESSIAH: BRINGS GOD NEAR, WHEREVER WE ARE

•    surprised to discover the Messiah standing right in front of her
•    Jesus brings God near, no matter how we’ve blown it
