"The Forgotten King Who Remembers Me"

Christ the King Sunday - Nov.20/16 - Lk.23:33-43 Play AUDIO (32 kbps mp3)

THE FORGOTTEN KING

•    a familiar account, viewed through two lenses
•    Jesus’ kingship: arrangement, actions, texts
•    “when You come into Your Kingdom”
•    people and rulers failed to recognize their king
•    a broken king who understands our weakness
•    sin = spiritual dementia: minds made dull, blinded

REMEMBER ME

•    penitent thief the only sane one: renders right verdict - Jesus’ innocence
•    real faith in Jesus’ coming: ‘when’ not ‘if’

WHEN GOD REMEMBERS

•    God remembers in conjunction with action
•    Jesus remembers to forgive from cross
•    forgiveness divine forgetting: remember sins no more

RE-MEMBERING THOSE WITH DEMENTIA

•    anxiety about dementia: cultural traps - hypercognition: emphasis on intellect
•    malignant social psychology: diminish personhood, belittle
•    malignant social positioning: be careful how you introduce someone

LIVING IN THE MEMORIES OF GOD

•    church has role in re-membering, bringing back together, help people be held
•    music powerfully rooted in memory, even when concentration fails
•    Korsakov sufferer not “de-souled” but coming alive in chapel
•    God “mindful” of humans – remembers us
•    memory both internal and external / corporate: individual, community, & God
