"A Father’s Role: Tapping and Telling"

Father’s Day June 19/16 - 1Kings 19:19-21; 21:20-26 Play AUDIO (32 kbps mp3)

KNOWING WHEN TO SAY “NO”

•    correction needed even though not welcome
•    chastening an indication God loves us

TRAINING AND INSTRUCTING WITHOUT EXASPERATING

•    avoid bitterness: commands clear, consistent
•    more than just a cop – know your kids, invest time & affection
•    Woodstock walkouts: bullying / abuse factors in discouragement

TAPPING

•    Lord’s instruction / mind-setting: teach Scriptural truth
•    Erikson ‘generativity’: influence one’s offspring
•    Elijah throws cloak on Elijah: enlisted as personal attendant; “my father”

TELLING

•    Lord’s training (paedia): involves discipline / chastening
•    Heb. 12: discipline associated with hardship, even pain
•    Elijah rebuking King Ahab: not the enemy; disobedience distances from God
•    objective standards help keep it from getting personal: even Amorites affected pre-Israel

TAPPING INTO TALENT

•    father prevails upon son to share his gift, discovers reward in edifying others
•    serving others a stretch, draws us out of our shell
