“From Legalistic Bondage to Spirit-living Freedom”

Gal.2:17-21; 4:1-7 (5:16-26; 6:7-10) - Sept.27/15 Play AUDIO (32 kbps mp3)

NERVOUS WHEN LAWLESS

•    let’s be clear on the boundaries, rules
•    Farley: taking away Ten Commandments essential for maturity

PAUL’S COURAGEOUS CONFRONTATION

•    called Peter on drawing back out of fear of Judaizers at Antioch
•    boldly held we’re justified by faith in Christ, not by observing the law

DYING WITH DETERMINATION

•    die to the law: and any right to boast of moral accomplishments
•    need to be ‘crucified with Christ’
•    crucify the flesh with its passions, desires
•    ‘deeds of the flesh’ disqualify one for God’s Kingdom
•    through cross, the world has been crucified to me

LIVING WITH THE LORD

•    living for God not ourselves
•    live by & keep in step with the Spirit: march along together
•    gone from pawn to possessor: from slave to having full rights of legal heirs

WHAT’S YOUR PLEASURE?

•    Farley: Spirit in us God’s replacement for law’s work
•    analogy: horse eyeing fence vs. contented dog without need for fence
•    law arouses sinful passions that bear fruit for death
•    sow to please the Spirit: eager for righteousness
•    Christ’s law: carry others’ burdens; faith expressed through love
•    “love your neighbour as yourself” sums up entire law
