“What to Insist On in Church Leaders”

WOULD YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER TO MARRY THIS MAN?

•    pop idols not always best candidates
•    check off the “grid” for desirable qualities
•    church leadership criteria reflect maturity in Christian character

MISTER TEFLON: NOTHING STICKS

•    distinction in roles between overseer/elder and deacon
•    above reproach
•    good reputation
•    respectable
•    temperate
•    self-controlled

SIMPLE SNARES: SEX, SUBSTANCES, SPEECH, SILVER

•    self-control applied to particular temptations
•    sex: a “one-woman man”
•    substances: not drunken
•    speech: not quarrelsome, 2-tongued, malicious talkers
•    silver: not lover of money or dishonest gain

PEOPLE SKILLS: PRESIDE & PROTECT NOT OVERPOWERING

•    God uses introverts and extroverts
•    hospitable
•    gentle not violent / ‘lording it over’
•    manage one’s family well: superintend, protect, care for (vs. ‘rule’)

FAITH BEYOND FUMBLING

•    what use if fumble the ball in the field of faith?
•    able to teach
•    not a recent convert - danger of conceit
•    keep hold of the deep truths of the faith

ENDURING REWARD FOR A DAUNTING TASK

•    charge to be “above reproach” intimidating
•    being an overseer is a noble task
•    gain excellent standing & great assurance in faith in Christ

PLAYING THE FIELD BUT A “ONE-WOMAN MAN”

•    Cincinnati Quarterback ribbed for wedding ring
•    spend time with One who desires relationship
