SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE
• lust big industry in culture
• pervasiveness of temptation, even when not looking
for it
AUTHORITY: WARNED, IN JESUS’ NAME
• instructed through Jesus to live pleasing God and
abstain from lust (4:1f,6,8; 1Pet 2:11)
BETTER: WHAT’S THE ‘SOMETHING BETTER’ HOLY LIVING PROMISES?
• seek to be blameless before God, please Him: He
wills / calls us to live honorably (3:13, 4:1,3f, 7)
• escape the negative effects of corrupting lust -
STDs, addiction, job loss (Eph 4:22; 2Pet 1:4)
COMMUNITY: THE PROTECTIVE BLANKET OF CHRISTIAN LOVE
• love overflowing for each other (3:12; 4:9f)
• brotherly love begets atmosphere for confession,
prayer, restoration (Jas 5:16,19f)
DURABLE, DELIGHT, DILIGENCE: 3D DEFENCE AGAINST SIN
• mutual love makes hearts strong / durable /
established (3:13)
• delight in the presence of God; knowing God helps
counter lust (3:13, 4:5)
• watch over heart with diligence (Prov 4:23; Mk
7:21ff; Mt 6:22f, 5:28f)
• need to fight lust seriously or risk going to hell
(Col 3:6; Gal 5:21; 1Cor 6:10; Heb 12:14)
